When it comes to the cultivation and creation of fine wines, there's no place quite like the Moselle
Valley. This fertile region has been famed for it's wine for thousands of years. From Riesling to
Chardonnay, from Crémant to Pinot Noir, the vineyards of Koeppchen, Palmberg and the
Grevenmacher Fels are noted, far and wide. The secret to this success is found in the very Earth
itself. Growing great wine isn't easy, it takes a lot to get it right, and the Moselle Valley has got what
it takes : The Sun, The Soil, The Slopes.
THE SUN :
The growth of grapes for wine-production requires the light and warmth of the summer sun. At
Alice Hartmann's, we harvest our grapes later in the year, to ensure the fruit is fully ripened on the
vine. That extra exposure to the sun means our grapes are high in sugar, thanks to the natural
moisture loss brought on by the continual heat. This is what gives our wine it's signature sweetness,
and fullness.
THE SOIL :
The Moselle Valley has all of the ideal components for rich and fertile soil, thanks to the abundance
of limestone-shell and slate clay. We pride ourselves on our insistence on the most natural approach
possible, with no herbicides or pesticides, and an emphasis on quality over quantity. Our grapes are
picked by hand, and our flavours are crisp and authentic. What grows in the field is what goes in the
bottle, every time
THE SLOPES :
The iconic terraced slopes of the Valley are crucial to our process, with their forty-five degree angle
and south-west orientation allowing them to catch the light of the sun, while providing shelter from
the more inclement weather. Not only that, the slopes provide excellent drainage, keeping our soil
from becoming either too dry, or too sodden. It isn't always easy, but our commitment to excellence
ensures that every harvest is an expression of joy, come rain or shine.
All of this and more goes into every bottle of Alice Hartmann wine, with each harvest being a
unique experience, that we invite you to become a part of.
